In a lightning protection system, low ground resistance is essential because lightning current dispersion occurs there. Each down conductor shall have an earth connection, made up of conductive elements in contact with ground capable of dispersing lightning current.

According to the national low voltage electrical technical regulation ”IS 3043”: “Grounding is primarily established to limit the voltage that metal blocks can appear at a given time from the ground, to protect and eliminate or reduce the risk of damage to electrical equipment used.

How to Achieve
the Perfect Earth Termination?

For effective earthing, it is essential to have a low resistance to ground, use conductors with high corrosion resistance and appropriate cross-section to carry the expected current. Also suitable for securing the joints of said conductors by exothermic or aluminum brazing.

Other decisive factors when designing a grounding system include:

  • Resistance has to be measured frequently.
  • Soil moisture will reduce grounding resistance.
  • Earthing enhancer compounds reduce the resistivity of the soil.
  • Underground electrical and gas installations must be determined to respect the safety distances for each.
  • Buried water pipes and tanks must be defined to connect them by equipotential to the earthing system.

In order to achieve adequate earth resistance in the earthing system, special electrodes for low conductivity soils are used – enhanced electrodes, deep electrodes or plate conductors should be used to achieve the suitable earth resistance.

As per Indian Standard IS3043:2018, the earth resistance value should not be greater than 10ohms and has to maintain the as lowest value for proper dissipation of the current to the earth.
